Review: Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson is a movie you want to cuddle to death! It's an adorable feel good movie with quirky characters. It's a must watch.

The year is 1965 on an island off coast from New England. It's about 12 year old Suzy, the troubled child, and 12 year old Sam, the unpopular scout, who after exchanging letters for a year decide to elope together. In the hunt after them is the island's police officer, Suzy's parents, the social services and a scout leader with his boyscouts. In the mean time a storm is gathering up over the island...

I really like how they took two unknown kids for the main roles (Suzy and Sam), specially since they fit like a glove to the characters. All the adults are well known names like Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton and so on and that gives the casting a neat contrast.

The only annoying thing with this movie is that I wish that the beautiful books that Suzy reads were real. I would have loved to read them. Other than that, I can't come up with anything to complain about, not even the ending.

Moonrise Kingdom is definitely a movie to watch when life feels upside down or dark. The atmosphere remind me a bit of Studio Ghibli's more light hearted movies. It's cute with some over the top moments but also that magical shimmer of being a child and experiencing an adventure and love for the first time.
